Getting To Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard
Visiting Martha’s Vineyard has never been easier if you are vacationing in Falmouth. With two ferries that travel daily between Falmouth and Oak Bluffs, it’s as simple as booking an online reservation and walking on.
The Island Queen operates seasonally between Memorial Day and Columbus Day weekend and leaves out of Falmouth Heights. Be ready to leave the car behind because this ferry is for walk-ons only. With just enough time to sip a mimosa or an early afternoon cocktail, you’ll enjoy the boat ride across the bay and dock in Oak Bluffs just 35 minutes later. As you step off the boat into the heart of the downtown area, you’ll be within steps of restaurants, tourist shops, the beach, and the famed Flying Horses Carousel that has been in existence since 1884 and, is still in operation!
You’ll want to pay attention to schedules as sailings can change depending on weather, time of year, or day of the week. Schedules and bookings are available on The Island Queen website. While you can purchase tickets at the dock in Falmouth, it’s always advised to book in advance since tickets can sell out on busy weekends and holidays. Generally speaking, the earliest boat leaves Falmouth Heights at 9 a.m., and the latest sailing from Oak Bluffs is at 6:45.
If you are staying in Woods Hole, hoping to bring a car over for the day, or need to arrive earlier, book a reservation on the Steamship which also has daily sailings to Oak Bluffs beginning as early as 6 a.m. and returning as late as 10:30 p.m.

Rent Bikes to Explore the Vineyard
Located just steps from the Steamship’s terminal is All Star Bike Rentals. With over 30 years in business, All Star has a large fleet and is fully equipped with youth and adult bikes, as well as helmets, baby seats, and buggies for those who are traveling with little ones. Book online, or walk in and rent when you get there. The staff at All Star are happy to help you find the perfect trail to explore.
The Martha’s Vineyard Bike Path which spans several miles is accessible right from Oak Bluffs and has scenic views and iconic stops along the way like the famed bridge from Jaws. Make sure to pack some water and snacks and enjoy your ride!
Beach Day on Martha’s Vineyard
In the heart of Oak Bluffs is Inkwell Beach. With calm water, white sand, and beautiful views, Inkwell is a great place to set up camp for the day or for a few hours. Bring sunscreen and some beach snacks, or if your trip to the beach is a last-minute idea, hit up any one of the multiple shops and convenience stores to purchase the necessities. You could also check out Sun ‘N Fun rentals, located just a short walk from Inkwell, which rents beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers for just $10 per day. Restrooms are located close by at the ferry terminal when you need them. When you’re done at the beach, walk through downtown and grab some ice cream at Mad Martha’s.
Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
If your idea of a good time includes food and beverages, Oak Bluffs has over 25 restaurants and bars to entertain you. Whether you are seeking fresh seafood, Italian, American, Mexican, or something unique, Oak Bluffs has something for everyone.
One of our favorite places to eat and relax at is The Lookout. Belly up to their bar, located on the covered front porch, and take in the stunning views of the Vineyard Sound. Order sushi, or get your lobster fix with the lobster roll, voted best on the Vineyard! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but be advised that to get a table you’ll want to call in reservations or get there right when they open because this place is always busy!
Other suggestions include Nancys, Sharky’s Cantina, Coop de Ville, and Offshore Ale Co.
Tour the Island
At only 95 square miles, it is possible to drive around the island in about 2 hours; that is if you were to drive non-stop. Take your car over on the Steamship, or, take our advice and rent a Jeep at Sun ‘N’ Fun in Oak Bluffs. Take in the salt air and warm breeze while you explore Edgartown, West Tisbury, and Vineyard Haven. Some of our favorite places to visit are Edgartown Lighthouse, the Aquinnah Cliffs, Menemsha, and South Beach.
Shopping on Martha’s Vineyard
Get ready to shop til you drop. The shopping in Oak Bluffs is a tourist’s dream. Boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, jewelry, and more all await you as you peruse the town. You’ll have no trouble finding souvenirs for yourself or your family. Visit the iconic Black Dog store, Island Outfitters, and Citrine, all located on Circuit Avenue. Or, if you are looking for something unique for the home, check out The Lazy Frog and The Green Room. Don’t expect to find many franchise stores; here, it’s all about supporting local businesses.
Tour Gingerbread Houses on MVY
Perhaps one of the most well-known tourist attractions on the Vineyard are the Gingerbread houses which were established in the mid-1800s by a Methodist group that held meetings on the Vineyard. These houses look like something out of a fairy tale and are a must-see on your day trip to Oak Bluffs. It’s also a convenient 10-15 minute walk from the ferry terminal and during the summer months, The Cottage Museum, located at the entrance to the houses, is open to visitors at just $3. While there were originally 500 houses, 300 of them remain, are privately owned, and have been beautifully restored to their original glamor.
